However, next to the breathing devices, one of the most important things a diver will wear is the scuba diving weights.

Why Wear a Diving Weight Belt?

Scuba diving weights and a weight belt are essential to a scuba diver. They are the part of the suit that determines how a scuba diver will ascend and descend into the deep blue waters. Normally, the scuba diving weights are placed inside of a weight belt and worn around the driver’s waist. However, there are also wrist and ankle weights that the scuba diver can wear for additional weight if needed. The main purpose of scuba diving weights is to offset positive buoyancy.

Which Scuba Diving Weights and Weight Belts Do I Need?

When shopping for scuba diving weights and weight belts, you will notice that they come in a wide variety of colors and shapes. The main thing you will need to pay attention to is your own body weight. Your total body weight will determine how many and which kind of scuba diving weights and weight belt you will need. You can find weight requirements in most scuba diving guide books.

The most popular scuba diving weight system is a nylon weight belt with a quick release buckle. If you buy this type of belt, you will need to buy the weights separately, depending on your body weight. Weights are sold in pound ranging from one pound to 10 pounds. Some scuba diving weights are curved to fit the waist time and some are finished or plastic coated.

You can also consider purchasing a buoyancy compensator with an integrated weight system. This scuba diving weight system will help keep your buoyancy compensator in place while eliminating the need to wear a separate belt or additional weights on the hands and feet. Many professional divers prefer this type of scuba weight system. It is the most versatile and easiest to use.

No matter what accessories you buy or what type of scuba diving you would like to do, you will need a good, solid, reliable weight belt. The scuba diving weights are very important in maintaining proper buoyancy and balance while diving in the waters. One should always check the diving guidelines in regards to proper weight and usage of the scuba diving weight systems.

scuba diving water tower

Scuba Diving in Water Towers and Other Dangerous Water Jobs

Scuba diving is something that enlightens and intrigues many people. Maybe your old one is worn and torn in some places or it's fine and you'd just like a new one for your new vacation. Whatever the reason, it pays to search around for the best price for your scuba diving suit. They are not cheap and you want to make sure you get a good one. A good one will keep you warm in colder waters, it will keep you dry, it will provide you with the flexibility to move while you're underwater and a good suit is just safer than one that isn't made of quality materials. So when you're searching for a good scuba diving suit, remember to look for the best quality for the best price. With just a little bit of hunting, you're sure to find the perfect suit for your new scuba diving vacation.

Scuba Schools

A great place to look for the latest scuba diving suits is at a scuba diving school. Scuba diving schools have suits for beginners as well as experts and they usually have the latest equipment. You can expect to spend a little more if you shop at a scuba diving school but you can also be sure you're getting a quality scuba diving suit. Those who teach scuba diving provide only the best for their students and they're not likely to skimp on quality.

Shopping Online

You have to be careful when shopping online. Shopping online may provide pictures and descriptions of what you're buying but you can't really be sure what kind of scuba diving suit you're getting until it arrives on your doorstep. The pictures and descriptions can easily be embellished and you don't know you're getting a lesser quality suit until it actually arrives. So really make sure you know what you're buying when you shop online. However, shopping online, whether retail or through one of those online auctions sites, are excellent places to get quality scuba diving suits for great deals. It might pay to check to see if the site has a money back guarantee in case you're not satisfied with the scuba diving suit that arrives on your doorstep.

When you get your new scuba diving suit, you'll feel great when you finally go scuba diving. Scuba diving is exciting all on its own but it's especially enjoyable when you have brand new equipment, such as a new scuba diving suit. Whether you're a beginner or an expert, you'll feel much better going under in a new scuba diving suit than you will going down in a suit that's worn and has a bunch of holes in it.

scuba diving shops

Scuba Diving Shops in Hawaii

Because diving and snorkeling in Hawaii is so popular, there’s no doubt that scuba diving shops are found all over the place. There are a lot of categories for scuba diving that many people prefer over others. These depend on what kind of purpose the divers have for looking for their scuba diving locations.

Ideal Conditions for Scuba Diving Locations

Scuba diving locations will always have ideal condition which allows the divers to appreciate the dive site and appeal to them enough to come back repeatedly. One of the things that divers usually look for in leisure scuba diving locations is the visibility of the dive spot. Areas that allow the divers great visibility will always be favored by divers especially if the area is also teeming with marine life. Extensive visibility is also a good safety feature that will allow the divers a clear view of any dangerous marine animals that may be on the prowl in the area.

A lot of marine life is also another attraction for scuba diving locations. Divers will not go back to scuba diving locations that offer nothing to see and experience. Having coral reefs and other marine attractions will always bring in the divers. Some dive areas have seasonal visitors that many divers wait for expectantly. Dolphins, whale sharks and other marine species often migrate around the world offering many people opportunities to dive with them. Many of these animals return to one area during a particular season and this may be one of the conditions that make scuba diving locations ideal.

The current around some scuba diving locations will often dictate how ideal it is to divers. All divers must check with the local government regarding the conditions of the sea before they go out for a dive. This is a safety precaution that will help to save your life. Not all ideal scuba diving locations have friendly sea currents. Novice divers must not risk their lives along with those of others to dive in areas known for strong currents.

Other attractions for great scuba diving locations will be rock formations and other interesting land formations in the area. Caves and caverns will always attract many numbers of divers even in fresh water rivers and lakes. Treasure or shipwrecks will also attract divers to other scuba diving locations in search for fame and fortune. Safety is always topmost when it comes to searching out locations for dives.

scuba diving lights

Finding the Best Scuba Diving Lights

Scuba diving lights are an important part of the sport because of how dense the light gets when you swim down a couple hundred feet. Of course it’s not necessary if you do strictly shallow, daytime dives, but for some extra adventure you will want scuba diving lights for deeper and night time dives.

In order to get the right scuba diving lights for you, there are a few things you will need to keep in mind.

What You’ll Need

It all depends on what type of scuba diving you’re interested in. If you will be diving at extremely deep water levels, the more bright and hefty lights you will need. If you want to dive during the dark hours of the day, you’ll also need more expensive and sturdy scuba diving lights.

If you are into simply diving during the sunset or sunrise hours or going just below the top of the water, then lower density scuba diving lights that tend to be less expensive and lighter weight should work just fine for you.

You will also want to decide whether you want to purchase your diving gear separately or as a set. There are some advantages to purchasing a set such as the value for your money, but these sets usually cannot be customized. When purchasing items separately, you have the convenience of purchasing the scuba diving lights that are customized to fit your needs.

Where to Find Them

Scuba diving lights can be found just about anywhere, but in order to find the right ones for you, you are best off doing some research.

You can find these kinds of lights through local scuba shops or even scuba shops at your diving destination. Just be sure to inquire about any warranties and guarantees the gear comes with, and what their return policy is. You may even want to rent and try pieces of gear before deciding to purchase the gear.

You can also find all the gear you need, including the specific scuba diving lights you need online. Form eBay to Amazon, the choices are usually endless. Just be sure to ask all the questions you have before making a purchase in order to guarantee your satisfaction.

scuba diving license fees

All About Scuba Diving License Fees

When Scuba diving depending on where your destination is, sometimes requires certain scuba diving license fees and registrations. As previously mentioned, it really does depend on where you want to go scuba diving.

The fits thing you should understand, is that there is a difference between scuba diving certifications and fees and scuba diving license and fees. Different countries require sometimes only one or the other, but some may require both, so let’s explore the two:

Scuba Diving Certifications

Generally, if you’ve earned your own PADI or Professional Association of Dive Instructors certification, than this means your certification should be recognized and accepted just about anywhere around the world.

Just make sure that you remember to bring your certification card along with you on your diving trips, as without it there is no guarantee you will be allowed to dive. However, if it is forgotten you may be able to get your instructor’s company to fax a copy of your certification to your destination’s scuba diving site.

Scuba Diving Licenses

Scuba diving licenses and fees are required by some countries in order to dive in their surrounding oceans. Without the license, you can face harsh penalties in the way of fines and even imprisonment. The reason these penalties are so harsh is due to the fact that countries are concerned for their environment and fear the damage amateur scuba divers can pose to their close ocean environments.

But not to worry about where to get a scuba diver’s license if you’re diving with a charter or tourist company. You will be covered under their licenses, but you will want to check in advance whether there are scuba diver license fees on top of the tour or charter fees.

Better off With a Charter

Because of the harsh environments scuba diving places on offshore marine life due to touching coral and wildlife, most countries will require you to be under the supervision of a diving company that offers charters and tours. These companies are licensed and prepared to ensure their sea life stays safe.

Save yourself some time and money on scuba diving certification fees and scuba diving license fees by hiring a scuba charter and skipping the headache. By being part of a group, you cans learn the right and wrong ways to treat your scuba environment, along with finding an adventure complete with safety that just makes a good match.

scuba diving lessons

The Importance of Scuba Diving Lessons

Scuba diving is an experience that will change your view of the world. You will wonder at the almost alien like appearance of the marine life. Before one can go scuba diving, you need to enroll in scuba diving lessons.

Scuba diving lessons are essential for your safety in the open waters. Most courses in scuba diving will last for at least several days. The course is usually given by a certified diving instructor and not just a certified diver. These are two entirely different people. The diver is certified after having scuba diving lessons and the diving instructor is certified after going through another course entirely different from those of the beginners.

Some scuba diving lessons operators might ask for a doctors' certificate especially for the older individuals. It is usually the prerogative of the school on who they ask for a certificate but you can expect to be asked.

What We Learn From Scuba Diving Lessons

Scuba diving lessons not only teach you how to handle the diving apparatus but they also teach you how to react to different situations when you dive in the open ocean. What you learn in the scuba diving lessons are foundations to your safety and to the safety of your diving buddies. Basics are usually taught during the beginner or novice course. There are intermediate and advanced lesson all taught by certified diving instructors who are well versed in the level that they teach in.

During most of the scuba diving lessons, all but the basic equipment are rented by the student. This is because some of the equipment can be expensive and you do not even know yet if you are really into scuba diving or not until you finish the course and dive in the open ocean. Of course, you can always buy your own regulators and air tanks if you are so inclined and if you can afford them. There is no law saying you can not.

Enrolling in scuba diving lessons is a requirement before you can actually dive. Most diving tours and operators will not allow uncertified people to go on their diving tours unless they have the right qualifications.

At the End of Scuba Diving Lessons

Usually, at the end of the scuba diving course, graduates or finishers will have an open ocean dive. Not all scuba diving lessons operators do it this way so you might like to ask before you enroll.

scuba diving lake meade

Scuba Diving in Lake Meade: Fresh Water Diving

A lot of people think that the ocean is the only good place for diving. That is not true. Although the ocean offers some of the most wonderful underwater views, there are also a lot surprises that you can find under the freshwater bodies.

Scuba diving in Lake Meade certainly has some of its perks. Where the ocean offers corrals, you will find some interesting structures under Lake Meade. When scuba diving Lake Meade in the Arizona side of the Hoover Dam, you can explore the "wishing well" cove.

The wishing well cove is considered as one of the prime scuba diving area in Lake Meade. This diving site offers breathtaking underwater views of immerse boulders and steep drop-offs. The topography of this dive site appeals to many diving enthusiast. In fact, a lot of people from all over the country would say that their scuba diving adventure in Lake Meade is never complete until they visit the wishing well cove.

Aside from the wishing well, should not forget to visit the 70-foot houseboat called the Marrymaker and the Batch Factory when scuba diving in Lake Meade. The Batch Factory is actually a piece of history underwater. When the Hoover Dam was constructed, the Batch Factory served as the main mixing plant for mixing concrete. When the Dam was opened, the Batch Factory was flooded and downed into the bottom of the lake.

Visiting Lake Meade

It is best to go scuba diving in Lake Meade during the summer. At this time, the water is not really so cold and weather is usually good. Note that the water in Lake Meade can be quite icy in other times of the year that it is not safe to stay in the water for more than a few minutes. Moreover, the water in the lake tends to be murky during other times of the years. If you want to explore Lake Meade, wait until summer time.

During the summer, a lot of diving enthusiasts visit this place so you will not really have many problems finding a diving partner. Freshwater divers are known to forge strong bonds with each other even at fist meeting so if you want to go scuba diving in Lake Meade but do not have your best friend with you to accompany you during your dive, don't worry. You can always find some good people who can accompany you during your dive at Lake Meade during the summer.

scuba diving jobs

Different Types of Scuba Diving Jobs

There are many different types of jobs related directly, or indirectly, to scuba diving. The different types of scuba diving jobs are determined by the level of certification achieved by the diver, what kind of work they enjoy, and whether they want a full or part time career.

Once certified as a professional scuba diver, a diver has many areas of business to work in. A diver can own or work in a retail store, assist the scientific exploration of the oceans, be a rescue specialist, or teach others how to scuba dive.

Most of the scuba diving jobs that are associated with recreation and vacation are geographically located in countries like Hawaii, Mexico, Australia, or the Caribbean.

Scuba Diving Job - Certification

A majority of scuba divers who seek certification choose the Professional Association of Diving Instruction, (PADI), an internationally recognized agency. Once enrolled in the program, they can step through increasingly difficult certification programs, from open-water private diver to rescue diver, dive-master, assistant instructor, instructor, and master instructor. Each time a level is achieved more opportunities open up for the scuba diver. Some scuba diving jobs are very specialized, such as underwater photography.

Scuba Diving Job – Dive Shop

One of the possible careers where you can put your love of scuba diving to work full time every day is to own or work in a dive shop. This is a great job because you work with other people that share your love of scuba diving. Working with a variety of scuba equipment, while testing it for safety, expands your product knowledge and makes you more valuable in the work place. Aside from drawing a steady salary with good benefits you are located in one spot and not constantly on the road.

Scuba Diving Job - Instructor

Scuba diving instructor is a very popular with young people who like to travel to many vacation destinations. The teaching usually involves a quick course, at the beginning of a vacation at a resort or onboard a cruise ship, about operation of the scuba equipment and proper underwater safety.

Scuba Diving Job - Oceanography

With the proper education, such as a degree in marine biology or oceanography, the lover of scuba diving is able to collect information that can be used in measuring the effects of global warming.

Scuba Diving Job – Offshore Oil Platform

A majority of the commercial demand for scuba divers comes from the large oil companies that operate off-shore. This work is extremely dangerous and usually involves building of underwater structures that are used in production and routine maintenance of the platform. Workers spend months at a time on these off-shore platforms that are at the mercy of the ocean.

scuba diving in puerto rico

Learning about Scuba Diving in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico offers some of the best scuba diving in the world because it is blessed with a wide variety of underwater terrain and diving conditions. With the continental shelf surrounding it on three sides, it has an abundance of coral reefs, caves, sea walls, and trenches for scuba divers to experience. Puerto Rico's scuba diving areas are divided into five different geographical sections: North and East, Culebra, Vieques, South, and Mona and Desecheo.

Scuba Diving In Puerto Rico – North and East

The north coast has only a few dive sites because it is exposed to northerly swells that make scuba diving impossible.

East coast diving is easy as the sites are relatively shallow and the seas seldom rough. The diving terrain typically is made up of fringing reefs with both hard and soft corals, especially bushy gorgonians. This is where the San Juan dive stores take the tourist divers.

Dive sites off the east coast are centered on a series of uninhabited islands; Palomino, Palominitos, and Cayo Diablo. Pure white beaches greet the tourist scuba diver, as well as ancient coral reefs that have been re-colonised by several species of gorgonians, creating a mystical forest interlaced with trails and tunnels. The diver must be very alert in these waters since swells can quickly stir up sediment, and make visibility very poor.

Rainwater run-off from the mainland's rainforest has a large effect on the topography of the surrounding area. Overall visibility through the water can vary widely from 25 to 50 feet.

Scuba Diving In Puerto Rico – Culebra

Because Culebra is a two-hour boat ride, it is easier to take the ferry and dive with a Culebra operator for a day.

Scuba Diving In Puerto Rico - Vieques

This is a great place to dive because there are very few divers, and the maximum depth is 60 feet or less. You are surrounded by coral islands and gently sloping reefs. Traveling from Fajardo to Vieques in the morning, on the ferry, allows you time to make two dives and return in the afternoon. The ferry ride is very inexpensive and the scenery is some of the most beautiful in the world.

Scuba Diving In Puerto Rico – South

The famous "Puerto Rico's Wall" runs parallel to the south coast and is easily accessible by dive boat. The area is quickly becoming a Mecca for scuba diving with resorts and dive stores popping up all over the area.

Scuba Diving In Puerto Rico – Mona and Desecheo

The natives of the area refer to these offshore islands, Mona and Desecheo, as the jewels in the crown. You need to carefully plan your trip to this area because of the unpredictable nature of the whether. You can dive in the northwest side only in calm whether.

scuba diving in maui

The Best Places for Scuba Diving in Maui

Maui has always been a hot spot for scuba diving, and for good reason. With crystal clear waters and beautiful temperate weather, who could resist? Since Maui offers a wide variety of scuba diving spots, tourists tend to find it challenging when trying to pick the spot that suits their experience and comfort level.

This guide will point you in the right direction to some of the most sought after scuba diving spots in Maui.

Molokini

Molokini is a crescent shaped isle just a 15 minute boat ride off of Maui. You can reserve a spot on a tour driven adventure to Molokini, or you can simply hire a small boat to take you there from Maui. Of all the spots on Maui to scuba dive, Molokini is thought of as number one.

In fact, you will be sure to find many creatures not found anywhere else in the world. Many veteran divers have reports seeing 45 foot sharks (but no one has been hurt) along with manta rays and other colorful wildlife.

The St. Anthony

This is Maui’s only official artificial reef. After sinking in 1997, The St. Anthony is the latest edition this scuba diving spot in Maui. The artificial reef first began in 1957 with 150 sunken automobiles. Due to corrosion, the state then implanted concrete filled tires. These tires made a perfect spot for fish to call home, and now with the addition of The St. Anthony, green sea turtles have been drawn to the spot. You can expect to see over 50 different species of fish when diving here.

Makena

This huge bay is shaped with the island of Maui. Green sea turtles are the main attraction of this site. In fact, they’ve seen so many divers they are no longer afraid. This means you have the opportunity to swim within touching distance! Along with the sea turtles, you’ll find different species of eels and beautiful lionfish.

La Perouse Bay

This bay was formed about 200 years ago, when the last lava flowed on Maui. Hawaiian endemics (fish found no where else in the world) can be found here, along with all 4 species of angel fish that live in Hawaii. Many scuba divers in Maui claim this spot to be the best of the best, due to the tremendous amount of fish specifies that can be seen at just about any time.

scuba diving in jamaica

Scuba Diving In Jamaica is a Great Spring Break Vacation Idea

Looking for something exciting and different to do during your Spring Break? What are some good scuba diving gifts that you can give? Well, anything that has to do with scuba diving will do. How about a nice set of flippers, or an entire scuba diving outfit, such as a wetsuit, weight belt, oxygen tank, or anything else the person will need once they're under water. You can get scuba diving gifts anywhere scuba diving equipment is sold and that person is sure to be appreciative of anything you give.

The New Scuba Diver

One great idea for a scuba diving gift is scuba diving lessons for the person in your life who has never scuba dived before but has always wanted to. Even if you don't live near water, you can still give that person the gift of scuba diving lessons. Scuba diving lessons can be held in an indoor pool, for instance, when an ocean or lake isn’t readily acceptable. You can purchase the lessons from an accredited source and give that as a scuba diving gift and the person is sure to love it.

Equipment

Of course, if the person is a scuba diving enthusiast, any sort of scuba diving equipment will do. A good thing to do is to find out if any of the person's equipment is worn out or in need of repair or replacement. Say, for example, the person's flippers are worn out and don't give as much resistance under water as they should. Give that person the scuba diving gift of new flippers. Anyone who loves to scuba dive will love anything you give as a scuba diving gift, especially if it's equipment the person badly needs.

Where To Get It

You can shop at your local scuba diving store for scuba diving gifts or you can shop online. Online auctions are excellent places to get scuba diving gifts for a great price, as many scuba diving items can be quite expensive. No matter where you get it, however, the person will love the gift and won't be able to wait to use it on their next scuba diving excursion. So give that person you love a scuba diving gift and just maybe they'll invite you along the next time they visit that whole other world under the sea.

scuba diving gear

Scuba Diving Gear Makes A Dive Comfortable

Many people learn to scuba dive because it can be a most enjoyable, leisurely activity. These people need scuba diving gear to make their dive trips exciting and enjoyable. There are also many people who work as divers for the military, for businesses and the police. These divers also need gear to help them accomplish their jobs efficiently and effectively. All of the divers need some of the basic scuba diving gear, but divers also take special pieces of scuba diving gear for special tasks. The scuba diving gear can be obtained at specialty stores that cater to divers and other sporting goods stores have scuba diving gear in special sections.

The most important gear is the equipment that allows the diver to breathe under the water for extended periods of time. Without this scuba diving gear, the divers would only be able to stay under the water for a few minutes. This scuba diving gear includes tanks that hold compressed air so the divers can breathe under water. These tanks are connected to a mouthpiece and other equipment that regulate the air for the diver. This equipment should always be in perfect condition to ensure the safety of divers while in the water.

Scuba Diving Gear Provides Both Safety And Comfort

Scuba diving gear keeps the diver safe and secure while under the water. The divers must be adequately trained or they could face disaster including death. The tools for breathing are highly sophisticated, but this scuba diving gear must be used properly. Divers meet disaster every year, and it is often due to human error using or maintaining the appropriate equipment. Divers must take care of the equipment available and use it properly.

Scuba diving gear keeps the divers comfortable so they can spend time in the water. There are wetsuits that keep the divers warm while they are on their dives. These wetsuits come in different models for different types of diving. Divers who go very deep into the ocean often need special suits to protect them. Divers can also use diving flippers that will help them move more quickly and easily. There are watches for use under the water. Divers use weights on a belt that help them go down in the water. Divers who want to bring back pictures of their adventures and creatures in the sea can take a special camera with them to get magnificent pictures.

scuba diving flippers

Scuba Diving Flippers Provide Speed

Scuba diving is a great leisure activity for many people and a necessary activity for certain businesses. Many people love to scuba dive in glorious places around the world with friends and family. Other people work for the military, corporations or the police, and they scuba dive to carry out the business of their employers. All of these people have special scuba diving gear that allows them to spend an extended period of time under the water. These people use tanks full of compressed air, wetsuits and other equipment so they can safely stay under the water. Scuba diving flippers are also an important part of the gear that scuba divers use for better experience under the water.

Scuba diving flippers help divers move more quickly while under the water. Scuba divers cannot stay under the water for an endless amount of time so it helps to move faster and more easily to make the best use of this time. Scuba diving flippers come in different styles, and divers usually choose a good set of scuba diving flippers that will enhance their dives. Divers take several factors into account when choosing the scuba diving flippers that they will use for each dive.

Scuba Diving Flippers Are Great Tools For Divers

Divers have different goals and objectives for each dive so they will want to choose the scuba diving flippers that will help them under the water. Divers have a choice of scuba diving flippers, and many of the flippers are carefully designed and manufactured to help the diver with their pursuits. Some flippers are designed with a split fin, and many divers choose this type. Divers also want to choose the flippers that will work well with the booties that they like to wear when they dive.

Flippers are also designed based on research and development with vents in the fin. These are supposed to provide the diver with extra power while in the water. Some of these flippers are designed to provide the power without putting extra stress on the diver’s leg. These flippers are designed for speed by increasing the efficiency of each and every kick. Divers can choose flippers with an open or closed heel depending on their preference based on their experience. Flipper design continues to improve, and there are some flippers that produce the action of a propeller rather than the action of a paddle. Some divers prefer these flippers over all of the other available designs.

scuba diving facts

Interesting Facts Any Scuba Diver Should Know

Facts about Scuba Diving History

The term SCUBA was a name for the "oxygen re-breather" that frogmen wore during World War II. It was invented by Dr. Christian Lambertsen for use by the U.S. Navy for underwater welfare. The military advantage of an oxygen re-breather is that, because it is a re-circulating system, there are no tell-tale bubbles at the surface, and duration of the dive is greatly increased.

SCUBA is an acronym for "self contained breathing apparatus". Today scuba usually refers to the in-line open-circuit equipment in which compressed air is inhaled and then exhaled into the water.

Scuba Diving Facts – Clothing

Most of the time, scuba divers wear wet suits to keep their bodies warm and also for protection. The other benefit of wearing a wet suit is that the scuba diver becomes more buoyant. Often times a scuba diver will wear fins on their feet to help propel and direct themselves through the water.

Scuba Diving Facts – Commercial Application

Due to the very dangerous work involved in professional scuba diving, some sort of certification is required to get a job as a professional scuba diver. Any commercial company that uses scuba divers is usually required to maintain some sort of diver-to-surface communication system.

A majority of the commercial demand for scuba diving comes from the offshore oil platforms of major oil companies. The work usually revolves around the maintenance of oil platforms and the building of underwater structures used in production.

Scuba Diving Facts – Scientific Diving

Scientific diving is the use of scuba equipment by scientists to conduct their work under water. The fact is that scientific scuba divers are scientist's first and scuba divers second.

Underwater geology, archeology, and marine biology are examples of sciences pursued underwater. Some of the scientific scuba diving is conducted by universities in support of undergraduate or postgraduate research programs.

The Environmental Protection Agency also uses scientific scuba divers to recover samples of water and marine organisms to be examined for signs of pollution.

Scuba Diving Facts – Naval Diving

Naval diving is the military term for commercial diving, and is drastically different than military diving. Most of the work done by navy scuba divers is to conduct maintenance and repair operations on ships and military operations. Once in a while, naval divers will be called on to recover downed aircraft, stranded submarines, missiles, satellites, and other military hardware.

Scuba Diving Facts – Recreational Diving

This type of diver uses scuba equipment for recreation and enjoyment. Through the years, as recreational scuba diving has become more and more popular, manufacturers have become aware of the untapped market and have released equipment that is reliable and easy to use.

Such things as buoyancy compensators and dive computers have made the sport safer and more convenient.

scuba diving equipment

Scuba Diving Equipment Keeps Divers Safe And Sound

Many people love to dive under the sea. Most divers have all the necessary scuba diving equipment with them on every dive that they take into the water.

Scuba diving equipment starts with the breathing apparatus that keeps them breathing while under water. The right apparatus for breathing means that they can stay under water for an extended period of time to do their work or enjoy the environment. The scuba diving equipment includes tanks for holding the compressed air necessary for a proper dive. The scuba diving equipment also includes the tubes, a regulator and a mouthpiece necessary to move the air available in the tanks into the body of the diver.

Scuba Diving Equipment Is Helpful And Necessary

The air supply equipment is absolutely the most important part of the equipment a diver takes on a trip under water, but there is other equipment that a diver uses to make their work or leisure activity a good experience. Most divers wear wetsuits to protect them from the low temperature of the water far underneath the surface. These suits come in different thickness so the divers that go deeper can buy a suit that will work properly at a great depth of water. These suits are available in many sizes from the shops that specialize in equipment for divers. There are also specialized suits for different types of diving.

The divers usually wear flippers on their feet to help them maneuver through the water. These flippers will help them go faster and farther. Scuba boots are great for keeping the feet warm and safe when under water. The diver usually has an underwater watch so they can keep track of the time while diving and a weight belt so they can descend to the depths of their choice. Depending on their goals for each trip, divers take different types of scuba diving equipment with them. Some divers want to take photographs so they will take a waterproof camera with them.

scuba diving cruises

Unique and Fun Scuba Diving Cruises

Scuba divers of all skills and ability love scuba diving cruises. The scuba diving course will teach the student hundreds of techniques and tons of valuable of information that will allow you to have a safe and enjoyable diving experience.

It is not always easy to choose the right scuba diving course. There are many scuba diving courses available, but how do you know which one to take? What are some of the qualities that you should look for in a scuba diving course? Here are a few tips of how to choose the right scuba diving course to meet your needs.

Class Accreditation

When choosing the right scuba diving course, make sure you choose one that has proper accreditation. There are many courses out there that claim to be accredited, but they are not accredited in any way. Look for scuba diving courses that are given through PADI, SSI, or NAUI. These are three of the largest scuba diving organizations in the world. You only want to be trained by the best certified instructors and these three agencies can assure you will receive the best training available.

Complete Your Internship

Before scuba diving certification can be issued, one will need to spend several hours in the water actually practicing the diving skills learned in class. Make sure your scuba diving course offers this internship. You will do this either in a swimming pool, in a lake, or even in the ocean. However, no matter how you do it, you will be under the close supervision of the certified scuba instructor. You scuba internship is a fun way to make sure you know and can perform all the scuba techniques learned in the classroom.

Get Recommendations

The best way to choose a good scuba diving course is through recommendations. Find some friends, coworkers, or other people who have taken their class and earned their certification and ask them what they think. They will be able to recommend the best courses and advise you of what courses and things to avoid. You could even ask the sales representatives at the local dive shop for their advice and recommendations.

Finding the right scuba diving course is difficult. It will take some time and research. However, there are some really great scuba diving courses out there. No matter if they are expensive courses or cheap courses, you will want to make sure they are accredited, have an internship and are able to issue a valid certification. This buddy check must be conducted before every dive. This pre-dive scuba diving safety check has two objectives: to ensure that all of your buddy's equipment is functioning properly and so that you are familiar with your buddy's equipment. You should know how to release their weights and releases, use their deflator, and their alternate air supply, all of which might be necessary in the event of any difficulties during the dive.

Your pre-dive scuba safety check should be conducted once you have put all of your equipment on, with the exception of your mask and fins. It is always recommended to perform this pre-dive scuba safety check while still on land or on the boat, but in special situations it can be conducted while in the water before the dive.

Scuba Diving Safety Checks - BWRAF

The safety check is broken down into five components which are abbreviated with the acronym BWRAF, they are in order; buoyancy, weights, releases, air, and final ok.

Scuba Diving Check – Buoyancy

The purpose of this check is to assure that your buddy's BCD is working properly. You need to begin by inflating your buddy's BCD, but be careful; inflating it too much might put to much pressure on your buddy and make them explode. At the end, make sure you deflate the BCD to ensure that the deflator is working properly.

Scuba Diving Check –Weights

Your responsibility to your buddy is to check their weight system, whether it be a weight belt or integrated weights. If your buddy is wearing a weight belt, then make sure that the quick release is free of obstructions and easily accessible. If they are using integrated weights, then check that their weight pockets n their BCD are properly secured and you know how to release them.

Scuba Diving Check – Releases

Check to make sure that all of your buddy's releases are properly secured. This includes their Velcro waist band and at least two shoulder clips. It is highly recommended that you touch each clip as you count it out loud, remembering to check the tank strap and clip. This can be accomplished by placing one hand on the bottom of the tank and the other on the first stage regulator and trying to move the tank up and down to see if the strap will move.

Scuba Diving Check – Air

Check to make sure your buddy's air is turned all the way on; then turn it a half a turn back. Also, test his alternate air source by taking two breaths from it.

Scuba Diving Check – Final Thumbs Up

Ask your buddy if there ready to go and if all is OK, you're ready to dive.

scuba diving Belize

Scuba Diving Belize: Enjoying Nature at Its Best

A lot of people find it hard to locate Belize in the map. Just think of the whole Belize scuba diving adventure as your treat to yourself after slaving in the offer for more than eight hours a day and fighting traffic for an hour or two everyday just to get to work.

scuba diving basics

Back to Scuba Diving Basics

Scuba diving is a fun and educational sport that will take you into a unique and beautiful world. It is a healthy sport that not only requires one to be in good shape, it also requires a clear, alert mind. There are many simple things to know and remember when scuba diving. Here are a few reminders of some common scuba diving basics.

Scuba Diving Basic #1: Make Sure Scuba Diving Is For You

Scuba diving is not for everyone. One has to be very comfortable with the water. It requires a strong, fit swimmer who is not afraid of marine life or afraid to go into the depths of the ocean or lake. Successful scuba divers should be able to swim a minimum of 200 yard relays without stopping to do at least a 10 minute tread and float exercise. If you have a medical condition, you should consult with your doctor before diving.

Scuba Diving Basic #2: Getting Certified

No just anyone can jump in the water and scuba dive. All divers must carry proper diving certification. This certification is obtained by completing a certified scuba course that is taught by a certified instructor. Many people can earn this certification in as little as 24 hours. Others will take a prolonged class. No matter how you get certified, you will need to pass the test and get the license.

Scuba Diving Basic #3: The Gear

You will always want to check and make sure that all of your scuba diving gear is in good, workable condition. Check it regularly. Make sure you buy all of the needed accessories and equipment before your dive such as weights, knives, fins, masks, regulators, and other pieces of equipment. Wash and care for your wet suit as suggested by the manufacturer.

Scuba Diving Basic #4: Know and Practice the Language of Diving

When diving, diver will need to know hand signals and sign language to communicate under the water. You must know these signs. Read about them and practice them frequently. Know the abbreviations and acronyms of all of the scuba terminology. Study regularly and keep up on the techniques, rules and regulations of the scuba diving world.

Knowing these for basic scuba diving steps will assure that you have a safer and more enjoyable dive trip. One should review these four areas frequently and always stay afloat with the latest changes with the rules and regulations. After all, it is better to be safe than sorry and that is very true in the world of scuba diving.

scuba diving

Scuba Diving Opens A New World

Scuba diving takes you under the sea. Many people thoroughly enjoy scuba diving because it takes them away from the life of every day activities to an entirely different world. Scuba diving takes adventurers under the sea where fish swim and coral provides a glorious backdrop. Scuba diving requires training for there are dangers under the sea. Sharks first come to mind as dangerous creatures in the ocean, but there are other dangers that people should learn about when training for scuba diving. Scuba diving provides people with the equipment and the knowledge to stay under the water for an extended period of time.

Scuba diving usually uses compressed air so the divers can breathe underwater for an extended period of time. The divers usually carry tanks on their backs with a supply of air. The training for scuba diving includes the use of these tanks of air, and the trainees usually practice in a swimming pool or a shallow natural pool of water to get used to using the tanks before they move on to deeper water. The trainers are highly skilled at scuba diving, and they help the trainees use the compressed air properly.

Scuba Diving Illuminates The World Under the Sea

Scuba diving requires special training, and the divers usually wear special outfits and equipment. Many divers wear wetsuits that are specially made for those going into chilly or deep water. The scuba divers usually have flippers that they wear on their feet to help propel them through the water faster and better. Many divers take trips as a hobby. They go diving because it is an escape from the land and normal routines. The divers usually enjoy the peace and quiet that they find far away from the shores.

Other divers work for commercial enterprises. They might dive to recover treasures or valuables that lie under the water. Some divers place or repair equipment that is under water. Some of these divers work in the oil and gas industries on jobs related to these businesses. Other divers are scientists who study life in the oceans. These people study fish or other scientific topics. Police or military divers are often used to help these organizations do their work properly. These divers usually have training beyond the basic training given to leisure divers. They often have to go down to extreme depths where there are more dangers, and they must be qualified to do their work at these depths.

key west scuba diving

Scuba Diving In Key West, Florida with Sharks and Ships

One of the most popular places to go scuba diving in the United States is in Key West, Florida which is located right off the coast of Southern Florida. No, this is not exactly a modern day sport. The history of scuba diving tells us that our ancestors have been scuba diving since about 4500BC. People living in the coastal communities in Mesopotamia, Greece and China were already diving into the depths of the ocean long before the modern scuba diving equipments were invented.

Men and women from these parts of the world practice what we know as "breath-hold" techniques to stay underwater for a few minutes. Accounts in the history of scuba diving tell us that some of these people can hold their breath longer than five minutes! Now that is really amazing!

Yes, some of these accounts maybe exaggerated at some points but people do stay underwater without scuba diving equipments even today so there is a big possibility that some divers in the past may have actually stayed underwater for several minutes without drowning. You see, at that time, people don’t just dive for fun.

Food shortages often drive people to search the bottom of the sea for food so diving was actually a means of survival for these people. When the survival of their families is at stake, a lot of people would risk everything, including their lives just to ensure that their families survive. The history of scuba diving tells us a great of stories about brave men and women who go through such length as risking their lives to save others.

Diving In Times of War

According to the history of scuba diving, the art of diving water was used as part of warfare tactics by the Greeks. During the Trojan War, divers were sent out to sea to sabotage the ships of the enemies. These divers go under the enemy ships and then puncture holes in the hull of the ship. They also cut the anchor ropes to destabilize the enemy ship during battle.

Aside from attacking and destabilizing enemy ships, the Trojans also make use of divers to design underwater defenses to protect their ports from the enemies. Based on accounts in the scuba diving history, the Trojans were also to destroy most of their enemy's ships through their underwater defenses. Unfortunately, building and repairing these underwater defenses can be quite costly too. In the course of building underwater barriers, many divers were injured and some of them drowned. Building underwater structures is a lot of hard work that even the strongest of divers often succumb to the muscle cramps and eventually drown to death.

florida scuba diving

Where to Go for Florida Scuba Diving

Florida is one of the greatest spots in the United States to go scuba diving. The waters here are usually full of marine life and interesting things such as wrecks and others. Florida scuba diving spots are plentiful including some fresh water dives for caves and caverns. Many sea vessels have been purposefully sunk in the area to create artificial reefs to attract the marine life.

Pensacola

Pensacola, Florida scuba diving spots consist mainly of wrecks of different varieties of sea vessels. They ranged from tug boats to schooners to naval aircraft carriers. There is also an oil rig or two that can be seen in some of the Pensacola, Florida scuba diving areas. Many of the man made sites are immediately occupied by marine life but you can see the silhouettes of the more recent sunken ships and rigs.

In this Florida scuba diving area, there are no shore entry dives, this means that you can not swim from the shore to the wreck that you wish to visit. These are the regulations of the government and the dive operators in this area.

Crystal River

In this area, manatees are the main attraction for divers but you must ask permission from the local ranges and government concerning diving with them because they are an endangered species and they are protected by the State. Florida scuba diving in Crystal River is very adventurous and not at all that deep. There are some caves for exploration in this area but the biodiversity is not that varied and you can expect the manatees to be the most interesting species you meet here.

This Florida scuba diving area can also be used for free diving and snorkeling. Dive tour operators in the river can also guide you to other dive spots close to Crystal River if you wish.

Florida Keys

Florida scuba diving is probably the best in the keys. This area is a chain of islands that play host to shipwrecks and some of the best coral reefs in the world. It is also home to the only living coral reef in the Continental United States, which one can access from many of the small islands dotting the Florida Keys.

Florida scuba diving operators are so abundant and they have numerous dive spots for you to choose from. Visitors from out of state usually head for the beach or the Florida scuba diving spots when they arrive.

fiji scuba diving

Booking A Fiji Scuba Diving Excursion

If you've never been to the Fiji islands and you'd like to go, one of the ways to truly enjoy your trip is to go Fiji scuba diving. Once you see those crystal clear waters, you won't be able to wait to go underneath to see what awaits you. You'll see sea life like you've never seen before, fish and sharks and coral reefs and much more. If you're not experienced with scuba diving, it might be a good idea to take some classes and get certified before you go Fiji scuba diving. You can either choose to go with a guide on a Fiji scuba diving excursion or you can go it alone if you're an expert. One thing's for sure, you won't be able to wait to go back once you've experienced all there is to see under the water during your Fiji scuba diving vacation.

Are You A Novice Or An Expert?

Before you go on your Fiji scuba diving excursion, you need to get certified. If you're already certified then you're all set. You just need to book your trip and go. If you're not certified and you've never been scuba diving before, there are many reasons why you should get certified before you go. One of the major reasons is for safety. First of all, you're going to be in a strange area and second, you're going to need how to use all the equipment before you actually take it under water. What if something goes wrong and you panic? That could be very bad. So take the time and spend the money to get your scuba diving certification before you leave on your Fiji scuba diving adventure. You'll feel better about being down there with all that gear on and your guide, if you're going to have one, won't have to worry about you as much.

Guide Or No Guide

If you're new to scuba diving, then you probably want to take a guide with you on your Fiji scuba diving trip. A guide will show you where to go and can look out for you if you're new to the scuba diving game. If you're an expert and you feel as though you don't need a guide, you should be able to find an area to go on your own. But don't brave it if you're not completely sure of yourself. It gives people a chance to view a totally different world just outside our beaches. We enter a totally alien world when we go scuba diving and many people are concerned regarding the danger of scuba diving. There are actually many dangers involved in this pastime but the main danger of scuba diving is not from the marine life or the ocean but from the person.

Before one can go scuba diving, one is required to learn fro a certified instructor. This requirement helps to minimize the dangers of scuba diving. There are so many things that the novice diver needs to remember and understand when diving, which is why the whole scuba diving course is essential because there are lessons which you need to know and learn before even going into the ocean. This is actually the main danger of scuba diving, forgetting something or taking the dive for granted.

The main danger of scuba diving is the diver forgetting his training. All divers are supposed to have a companion when they go scuba diving. This ensures that there is another person to help you when you are in danger. This safety measure is taught at the scuba diving program when you enroll in one. Some of the training and lessons taught at the scuba diving course may seem redundant or irrelevant but these are the things that will keep you safe once you are in the open ocean. There are many dangers of scuba diving and these do not focus solely on the marine life but also on the ocean itself.

Other Dangers of Scuba Diving

The other dangers of scuba diving are in the marine life and the waters. When you go diving, it is best to be familiar with the marine life in the local waters so you will have an inkling what to expect and which animals or plants may be dangerous. Many of the bigger marine animals are aggressive and may attack when you get too close to them. Some have poisons that can stun you and others have vicious teeth.

Knowing the current of the waters you will go diving into is also a must to be able to avoid being swept out to sea. Many scuba divers forget themselves due to the beautiful sights they see and are swept out with the current. This can be dangerous because you will have a difficult time swimming against the current to get back to where you started from.

Listen to your scuba diving instructor during the lesson to be able to keep yourself safe when in the open waters. The many dangers of scuba diving are all too real and knowing what to expect and how to react can save your life.

cuba scuba diving

Discover Cuba Scuba Diving

When many people think about scuba diving trips, they rarely think about the small island country of Cuba.
